Q: will i be able to create my own logo’s for my hero/villian’s costume?
A: For very clear reasons the game developers were unable to put this facility into the game.
Note: however. there will be quite a substantial amount of logo to choose from. which will hopefully mean that you will be able to choose one that embodies your character
Main Story:
Simply put, there was a large apocalyptic war which ended in Lex Luthor killing Superman and winning the battle of good versus evil. However, what he didn’t know is that Braniac had used that war to make the villains and heroes pit against each other, resulting in the near destruction of both sides.
Lex Luthor, knowing that he would not survive the onslaught that Braniac was about to deliver, used his remaining abilities to travel back in time to warn everyone of what was about to occur. Though both heroes and villains are in distrust of each other and still have battles, they decide that Braniac is the ultimate evil which both need to defeat if either side is to survive.
Lex then releases hundreds of thousands of “Exobytes” throughout the world, which attach themselves to host humans and grant them super natural powers. When creating a character, you are creating a human which has just been granted those powers, molding them into a super hero/villain to help the battle against Braniac, while also combating villains/heroes.
Character Creation:
The following is in the exact order that you choose when making a character, collected from our video from New York Comic Con. See the video [here].
Gender
You may choose between Female and Male characters. Your gender does not influence your character other than cosmetically.
Body Types
There are three body types to choose between and are the same for both genders. They are Small, Medium, and Large. Small is characteristic of a teenager, medium is an athletic mature character, while large gives the appearance of being proportionately bigger if you are a female, and extremely muscular/bulky as a male.
Your body type does not influence your character other than cosmetically.
“Inspired By” (Optional)
Before deciding your powerset, weapon, and costume, you may choose to be inspired by a famous DC character. Choosing an inspired by character will then automatically choose your powerset, weapon, and clothing to match the DC iconic you chose. After completing this process, your character is still open to change in any way or form. You may still change his costume, colors, weapons, powerset, etc. Inspiration is to give you a template to work off of, though you can still play with that specific template if you choose to.
Powerset
Your powerset determines the powers that you possess as a character. As of release there will be 6 powers to choose from, and each power is split up into two “skill trees” for further customization. Your power set will emanate from your weapon, and will influence how your character appears in combat. A player with nature and a staff will appear differently than a character with fire and a staff, though it does not benefit you in combat any way other than what the abilities you gain can do.
The powers are split up into three categories, with two powers per category. The categories are Defence, Control, and Healer. Defence specializes in being the archtypical tank, control takes advantage by influencing the characters around them, while healer is the obvious support role.
You may notice that there is no “offensive” category. This is because all of the power sets are meant to be offensive, and in order to unleash your abilities you must first gain your power (or “mana”) through attacking with your primary weapon.
Each hit will gain a small amount of power, and drains when using an ability. You do not gain power from standing still, requiring all characters to be active in combat.
List of Powers:
- Fire (Defence)
- Gadgets (Control)
- Ice (Defence)
- Mental (Control)
- Nature (Healer)
- Sorcery (Healer)
- *Iconic Powers:
Iconic powers are not a powerset that you may choose from when creating a character. It is an optional tree that every character has access to, and contains famous powers that DC iconics are known for. The only disadvantage to spending in this skill tree is that you would be spending points that you could spend in your regular powerset.
Movement Type
Your movement type greatly influences how your character plays and feels throughout the game. You will gain skill points throughout your playtime of which you can choose to spend into special movement type skills.
Flight:
Flight is pretty self explanatory. Your movement and skills would be based around flying in the air. One of the examples is being able to slam down onto your opponent from the sky.
Acrobatic:
Acrobatic consists of being able to jump high, glide, grapple, and climb buildings. It is apparent that they have a double jump, and can glide as a way of traveling between distances. Grapple hooks have been announced, as well as being able to grapple someone and pull them toward you (much alike scorpion in Mortal Kombat).
Super Speed:
With extremely fast movement speed you can have options to spin around you enemy and daze them. Super speed characters can run up buildings and jump long distances using that speed. If the super speed character stalls while running on the side of a building, they will fall down.
Weapon
Finally, your weapon is the main attack mode that you can choose. It will determine what kind of attacks and combos your character can use, of which also has its own skill tree that can be spent into.
- Bow
- Brawling
- Dual Pistol
- Dual Wield
- Hand Blast
- Martial Arts
- One Handed
- Rifle
- Staff
- Two Handed
There are a lot of options for character creation, and we suggest that you check the link at the top of this section for a good walkthrough of the character creator. You may choose a skin type, which can make you look a humanoid with different textures. Some of the skins include tiger, lava, robotic. There are animal skins to choose from.
You may choose between different hairstyles which are still visible if you choose a robotic or animal character. There is also an extensive list of costume items to choose from which include wings, capes, helmets, shirts, etc. They cover a wide range of historical armor and looks, as well as fictional, futuristic, or anything in between.
The Game World:
Player Hubs:
Player hubs are the main congregation area for villains or heroes. They are completely sealed off to only your faction and contain the Auction House, Vendors, or anything else a main city would house for a standard MMO. The Villains can be found at the Hall of Doom, while Heroes have the Justice League of America Watchtower.
Cities:
Cities are the largest maps of the game. There are currently two, Metropolis and Gotham, and both are very large in scale (confirmed at approx. 900 square blocks each). In these cities is where you will find a majority of your missions, though there are instances within these cities for major missions. If you choose to play on a PvP server, you will encounter villains and be forced to deal with them. On PvE servers, you can safely explore the city unless you choose to flag yourself as a threat.
Alerts:
Alerts are PvE encounters with a small group of players. They consist of going to battle on large scale maps which are in well known DC areas.
Raid Zones:
Raid zones are also PvE encounters, but can be found in the open world cities of Gotham and Metropolis.
PvP Arenas
Arenas are player versus player maps with a specific objective such as capture the flag. These are instanced battles.
Iconic Arenas
These arenas allow small scale battles while using an iconic DC character. These characters are unlocked through gameplay, and replace your character in this battle. Some of the Iconics include Batman, The Joker, Superman, and Lex Luthor, among others.
Other Information:
Leveling:
Leveling is the same as any standard MMO. You complete objectives and destroy enemies to gain experience points which allow you to level up. Leveling gives you points to then spend in your power trees.
Note: The currently known level cap is 30.
Server Types:
- Player Vs. Player,
- Player Vs. Environment,
- Role-Playing, and Role-Playing
Note: More information about these specific server types will be announced when launch comes closer.
- Player Vs. Player are all confirmed.
Technical Information:
Character Slots
You will be able to create more than one character, however the maximum amount has not been released.
Confirmed Countries
North America and Europe have been confirmed to have playable servers.
More to be confirmed as launch approaches.
Cross Platform Play
It has been announced that the servers for PC and PS3 will be separate. You will not be able to play with a friend that is on another platform.

Subscriptions, Micro-Transactions, and Payment Plans:
Note: The game will require a subscription fee which has been speculated to be around $15 per month. This fee is additional to the cost of the game itself, and is required to play the game. This is the same for both PC and PS3 versions. Lifetime subscriptions are not currently offered or confirmed.
Micro-Transactions will exist in the game, however the buyable items only affect your appearance and do not grant statistical benefits. There will most likely be a month long trial included with purchase, but this isn’t confirmed yet. This is to prevent those with a higher income from having an advantage in game.
Payment plans are still being processed, and it is not known if you will use SOE game cards or PSN game cards when playing the game through PS3. Credit Cards are always accepted.

Q: Can I play as my favorite iconic DC character?
A: DC Universe Online is about creating a brand new legendary character of your own that will live and act in the DC Universe. Therefore, you will not be able to play as one of your favorites, but instead be allowed to use the “inspired by” function in character creation that will help you create a custom hero that is inspired by a real DC hero or villain.
That being said, there is a specific 2v2 iconic PvP section that is outside the continuity of the game, where you will be able to fight as, and against, the iconic heroes and villains of the DC Universe.
