They have the (undiscovered) items databased and when it is discovered, an announcement goes out to the “server control center” and it is then listed as discovered. All they had to do was do a auto-count of all the items still listed as undiscovered.

Even with the new expansion it still looks like the old game, something will take over WoW soon – just like what happened to EQ really. The game will exist but no one will be ever online. I miss EQ when it was busy, it was better than WoW – but WoW in the early days was better than now.
