According to massively

It seems the bell has finally tolled for The Chronicles of Spellborn, the troubled free-to-play MMORPG from Playdom. The fantasy title, which boasted a unique combat system and attempted to alleviate the grind common to the massive genre through its mission system, will be shutting its doors for good in September. Spellborn has had a checkered history since its 2009 inception as a pay-to-play title. Shortly after release, its development team went bankrupt before it was slated for free-to-play distribution by Acclaim and Frogster.

According to a report published on Games.com, last week’s server outage (which sparked a brush-fire of cancellation rumors) was temporary, but the game will nonetheless be closing next month. “Yes we do plan to close the game at the end of the month,” said a Playdom rep via email. “The servers were down on Monday, but that was due to an unrelated technical issue; the game should be back up now until the end of this month.”

After it was announced that Spellborn would go free-to-play, the player base was initially enthusiastic. However, it soon became apparent that Acclaim was basically abandoning the game until the re-release. The game download from the website, the patcher, then the game client itself ceased to work, forcing players to use third party downloads. A bug appeared that caused all players above level nine to be forced to changed their passwords every day, or be unable to enter the game.

Acclaim refused to respond to tickets posted inquiring into when Spellborn would be re-released, causing suspicion among the players that the game would not return. Acclaim sold out to Playdom who then sold to Disney leaving the game with no support, administrators or moderators. Players who tried to contact all companies concerned – Spellborn NV, Frogster, Acclaim, Playdom and Disney received no replies. A Games.com writer recently contacted Playdom and was told the game is being shut down at the end of August 2010, she passed on this information to the players, who are saddened by the news and have began a petition to keep it online. Petition link not allowed, please google “Rescue Spellborn” if you wish to sign. (edited by player Debbilicious)

I never played this one, Im not sure it even had a proper launch, another still born MMO, it did not even have its own domain for god sake it was a sub domain of Acclaim who frankly are losers
